Honey Golds in Mildura

Did you now that the Honey Gold season is not QUITE over yet!! The last of the Honey Golds are actually grown in Mildura, Victoria!

While this is not the most conventional place to grow mangoes, the farmers that are willing to put in the hard work are met with very favourable market conditions as there is very little competition. Mildura Honey Golds are harvested during late March and early April.

Strawberry Planting Has Begun!

On Sunday 18th March 2012 we started planting our first strawberry plants for the season!! It's hard to believe that it is heading into winter already and in 8 short weeks we will begin to harvest our first berries.

All of our strawberries are grown on our own farms in Wamuran, Queensland. This season we will be growing three different varieties - Ruby Gem, Festival and Fortuna. There are many different varieties of strawberries but these are three of the "best eating" varieties.

Honey Gold Mango Competition Winner!

On Friday 2nd March 2012, the winner of the Honey Gold Mango Competition was drawn!! With just shy of 15,000 entries from all over Australia, Lilia M. from Carindale, Queensland was the lucky winner!! She bought her Honey Gold Mangoes from Fancee Fruit and Deli at Westfield Carindale.

On Saturday 17th March 2012, the Piñata Farms team, along with David Vedelago and his team at Fancee Fruit and Deli, presented the brand new "charcoal" Toyota Yaris to Lilia! She was very excited and even brought along some friends and family to help her celebrate!

Green Skin, No Worries!!

Piñata Farms grows three hybrid varieties of pineapple. These varieties tend to have a greener shell colour than the "stereotypical" golden orange pineapple. In fact, if a hybrid pineapple is allowed to become yellow all over, it will be overripe inside!

Pineapples do not actually ripen any further after they're picked, meaning that the best time to eat a pineapple is as soon as you have bought it! We hear many stories of people taking home greener skinned pineapples and waiting for them to "colour up" in the fruit bowl which doesn't usually end in a pleasant eating experience!
