Piñata Farms grows three hybrid varieties of pineapple. These varieties tend to have a greener shell colour than the "stereotypical" golden orange pineapple. In fact, if a hybrid pineapple is allowed to become yellow all over, it will be overripe inside!
Pineapples do not actually ripen any further after they're picked, meaning that the best time to eat a pineapple is as soon as you have bought it! We hear many stories of people taking home greener skinned pineapples and waiting for them to "colour up" in the fruit bowl which doesn't usually end in a pleasant eating experience!
Piñata farm managers have been harvesting pineapples for over 20 years and know how to pick the perfect pine. Depending on the time of the year, the skin colour may be different but you can trust that the fruit is always deliciously sweet and juicy! When a pineapple is ripe the internal skin colour will be yellow and (depending on variety) it may have a "translucent" look where the natural sugars have become very concentrated.
A few key things to look for when picking a pineapple to buy are:
Nice full "eyes". These are the hexagonal shaped areas on the pineapple skin.
Sweet aroma.
Firm to touch.
Next time you are shopping for a pine, don't be alarmed if the skin is greener than what you would normally imagine - it is still ripe and 100% delicious!
